About Blackburn Monitoring

In short

Blackburn Monitoring provides low cost drug and alcohol testing and monitoring in Los Angeles, with a real coordinator behind every program. We are part of The Blackburn Group, which has served people in recovery on the Westside since 2014, so testing can lead directly to therapy, sober living, mentoring and scholarship help.

Why Blackburn Monitoring exists

Drug and alcohol testing is often treated as a transaction: pee in a cup, get a result, leave. For a lot of people that is not enough. A parent who just got a positive result for their son needs someone to talk to. A person three months out of treatment needs a way to prove, week after week, that they are doing the work. A therapist needs results quickly, not a week later. An attorney needs paperwork done correctly.

Blackburn Monitoring was built to fill that gap: low cost drug and alcohol testing in Los Angeles, with a human component and a referral network that most testing services simply do not have. Every program has a monitoring coordinator behind it. Every result goes only to the people you authorize. And when testing shows that someone needs more, we can help them find it.

Part of The Blackburn Group

Blackburn Monitoring is one part of The Blackburn Group, a family of Los Angeles organizations that has served people in recovery on the Westside since 2014. That history is what makes our referral network real. When we say we can connect you with more support, we mean people we work alongside:

  • Blackburn Clinical Services

Therapy and psychiatric care for substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns.

    blackburnclinical.com
  • Blackburn Recovery Services

Sober living and sober apartments for men in West Los Angeles, founded in 2014.

    blackburnrecoveryservices.com
  • Blackburn Mentoring

One-on-one mentoring for accountability and structure.

  • The Blackburn Foundation

Our 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which offers treatment scholarships and community programs.

Because these organizations are part of one group, monitoring can be the first step toward any of them, without making you start over with strangers.

Our founder

The Blackburn Group was founded and is owned by Robby Patrick. Robby began working in the field in sober living in 2012 and founded Blackburn Recovery Services in 2014. He went on to found The Blackburn Foundation in 2023 and co-found Blackburn Clinical Services in 2025. Over that time, he saw again and again how much difference it makes when someone has a person in their corner, not just a rule to follow. Blackburn Monitoring brings that same approach to testing.

What we believe about testing

Testing is a tool, not a judgment

A drug test tells you whether a substance was detected. It does not diagnose anyone, and it should not be the only basis for decisions about someone’s care, as the National Institute on Drug Abuse points out. We treat results as information to act on with care.

Accuracy protects people

Instant screens are a first look. When a screen shows a presumptive positive, we can send the sample to a partner laboratory for confirmation. We provide chain of custody documentation when results need to hold up for a court, attorney or professional program.

Privacy is non-negotiable

Results go only to the people you authorize in writing. You decide who is on that list.

Affordability keeps people going

Monitoring helps most when it lasts long enough to build a real record. We keep our programs low cost so that money is not the reason someone stops.

Monitoring is the first step, not the last

If someone is struggling, the most useful thing we can do is help them get support. Our coordinators can make introductions across Blackburn and point people toward community resources.

Our team

Our team has experience in mental health and substance use, and we know that the people who call us are often worried, embarrassed or overwhelmed. We aim to be calm, direct and kind. You can expect a real person to answer your questions, explain your results and remember your situation the next time you call.

Where we are

Our office is at 12326 Venice Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066. Testing is by appointment, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, with testing at other Blackburn locations on the Westside outside those hours and mobile testing available for an additional fee. See our location page.

Common questions

Who owns Blackburn Monitoring?

Blackburn Monitoring is part of The Blackburn Group, which was founded and is owned by Robby Patrick.

How is Blackburn Monitoring different from a testing lab?

A lab processes samples. We run testing programs with a real coordinator, share results only with people you authorize, use partner laboratories to confirm positives, and connect people to therapy, sober living, mentoring and scholarship help when they need more than a test.

Do I have to use other Blackburn services to test with you?

No. Monitoring stands on its own. Other Blackburn services are there if and when you want them, and your coordinator can make the introduction.

Is The Blackburn Foundation a nonprofit?

Yes. The Blackburn Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that offers treatment scholarships and community programs in Los Angeles.
