What drug and alcohol testing costs, and why

In short

Blackburn Monitoring keeps drug and alcohol testing low cost in Los Angeles. Your price depends on which tests you need, how often you test, lab confirmation, chain of custody documentation and where you test, and your coordinator will give you current pricing for your plan by phone.

Why we do not post a price list

Two people can both say they need drug testing and need completely different things. One needs a single breath test. Another needs random urine and alcohol testing three times a week, reports to an attorney and a therapist, and chain of custody paperwork. A single price on a web page would be wrong for most people. Instead, we explain what goes into the cost here, and your coordinator gives you current pricing for your specific plan on the phone, before you commit to anything.

What we can promise is that Blackburn Monitoring is built to be low cost. We want people to be able to keep testing for as long as it helps, not just for a week or two.

What affects the cost of testing

1. Which tests you need

Each test type has its own cost. An instant 12 panel urine screen, a breath test, an EtG alcohol test and a saliva test use different supplies and processes. Your coordinator will recommend only the tests that answer your question. For example, if alcohol is the only concern, you may not need a full drug panel every time. Compare options on our test types page.

2. How often you test

Frequency is the biggest driver of total cost over time. A plan with several tests a week costs more per month than a plan with one, even though each test costs the same. Many people start with more frequent testing and reduce it as they build a record, which lowers cost over time.

3. Lab confirmation

Instant screens give results right away. When a screen shows a presumptive positive, the sample can be sent to a partner laboratory for confirmation with a more specific method, which adds cost. Confirmation is especially important when a result will be used for legal, professional or major family decisions, because screening tests can occasionally be wrong (NIDA). See how lab confirmation works.

4. Chain of custody documentation

If a court, attorney or professional program requires chain of custody paperwork, the added documentation and handling can affect cost. If you do not need it, you do not pay for it.

5. Where you test

Testing at our Venice Blvd office, Monday to Friday 9 AM to 5 PM, is the most affordable option. Testing at other Blackburn locations on the Westside is available outside office hours. Mobile testing, where we come to your home or workplace, carries an additional fee.

6. Reporting needs

Most plans include sharing results with the people you authorize. If your situation needs a particular reporting format for an attorney or program, mention it on your intake call so it is included in your quote.

Ways to keep cost down

  • Match the test to the question. Do not pay for a drug panel if alcohol is the only concern, or the other way around.
  • Test at the office when you can. Save mobile testing for when it really helps.
  • Disclose medications up front. Knowing what you take helps us interpret results and avoid unnecessary confirmations.
  • Avoid alcohol-based products before EtG tests. Hand sanitizer and mouthwash can produce detectable EtG (Mayo Clinic Laboratories), which can lead to questions and extra testing.
  • Review your frequency. Ask your coordinator whether your plan can taper as your record grows.
  • Check your requirements first. If an attorney or program requires a specific vendor, confirm that before you pay for tests elsewhere.

What you get for the cost

When you compare testing options, compare what is included, not just the price per cup. With Blackburn Monitoring, every plan includes:

  • A real monitoring coordinator who knows your situation.
  • Testing by appointment, with observed collection when needed.
  • Results shared quickly with the people you authorize in writing.
  • Access to partner laboratory confirmation for positives.
  • Chain of custody documentation when required.
  • A referral path to therapy, psychiatry, sober living, mentoring and scholarship help across Blackburn.

A home cup bought online may cost less per test, but it is unobserved, unconfirmed and comes with nobody to call. A single test from a large lab may not be set up for recovery monitoring or legal use at all. Our goal is to sit in the middle: affordable enough to sustain, careful enough to trust.

If cost is a barrier to treatment

Sometimes testing reveals that someone needs treatment they cannot afford. The Blackburn Foundation, our nonprofit, offers treatment scholarships for people who need care and cannot cover the full cost. Your coordinator can tell you how to ask about them. Learn more at The Blackburn Foundation.

Need more than testing?

A test result tells you what is happening. It does not tell you what to do next. Because Blackburn Monitoring is part of The Blackburn Group, your coordinator can connect you with the right kind of help without starting from scratch somewhere else.

  • Therapy and psychiatry

Individual therapy and psychiatric care for substance use and the mental health concerns that often travel with it.

    Blackburn Clinical Services
  • Sober living

Structured sober living and sober apartments for men in West Los Angeles, for when more support at home would help.

    Blackburn Recovery Services
  • Mentoring

One-on-one mentoring for accountability and structure, with a consistent person who checks in and helps you follow through.

    Blackburn Mentoring
  • Scholarship help

Treatment scholarships through our nonprofit for people who need care and cannot cover the full cost.

Common questions

Why is there no price list on the website?

Because plans vary so much. Test type, frequency, lab confirmation, chain of custody and mobile testing all change the cost. Rather than post a number that is wrong for most people, we give you an exact quote for your plan when you call.

Does insurance cover monitoring?

Coverage varies by plan and by the reason for testing, and many people pay for monitoring directly. Ask your coordinator about your situation when you call.

Is lab confirmation included in every test?

Lab confirmation is available for presumptive positives and may add cost. Your coordinator will explain when confirmation is recommended and how it is priced before you start.

Does mobile testing cost more?

Yes. Mobile testing at your home or workplace carries an additional fee on top of the test itself. Testing at our Venice Blvd office is the most affordable option.
